Alumnae Association Awards of Distinguished Service and Achievement

Annually at Reunion, the Alumnae Association recognizes graduates and friends of the institution for their professional and personal accomplishments and service to their profession and to Carlow. These awards recognize those individuals who embody in their own life the Carlow University traditions of excellence and shared values through their professional achievements, personal accomplishments and dedication to the mission of the university. They have distinguished themselves not only in their academic and professional lives, but also in their dedication and commitment to Carlow.

We are pleased to announce the 2009 award recipients who were honored Saturday, October 17th during Alumnae/i Weekend at the annual luncheon at the Pittsburgh Golf Club.

2009 Award Winners

Barbara A. Conniff, ACSW, ’71

Barbara Conniff currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Milestone Centers, Inc., a private, non-profit community based agency providing a continuum of treatment and support services to individuals with mental illness and developmental disabilities and their families.

Barb received a bachelor’s degree from Carlow College in Psychology and a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Social Work. She is a member of the national Academy of Certified Social Workers and her 43-year professional career has included a variety of local health care, public health and mental health care positions. Barb is a graduate of the First Class of the Allegheny County, United Way and Carnegie Mellon University collaborative Non-Profit Executive Training Program.

Barb’s social work career has extended far beyond the regional boundaries of western Pennsylvania. Through her participation in leadership positions with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), including currently serving as Chairperson of the NASW Foundation Board of Directors, and the Pennsylvania Community Providers Association (PCPA), she has worked to increase the visibility and improve the public perception of the social work profession.

Mildred Jones, PhD, CS, RN, ’83

Mildred Jones, PhD, CS, RN is an Associate Professor at Carlow University School of Nursing. She received her BSN from Carlow University, her MSN from the University of Pittsburgh (Pulmonary Clinical Specialist), and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. Her nursing career spans over 40 years as a critical care nurse, educator and researcher. Dr. Jones’ research includes the areas of cardiovascular and geriatric nursing, and minority health. She has published in several journals as well as presented nationally and internationally and the NIH, NIA, NINR and the American Lung Association have funded her research. 

Dr. Jones has received numerous honors including being selected as the recipient of: University of Pittsburgh Provost’s Diversity Seminar Fellow, District #6 Nursing Practice Award, Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing, American Heart Association’s Best of Scientific Sessions Award, City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Council Honoree, African American Achievement Award recognition from Governor Edward Rendell, Nobel Woman Community Service Award and Cameos of Caring Nurse Educator Award. She is on the Board of Directors of the PSNA District #6 and the Northside Institutional Church of God in Christ. 

Maureen Weldon Kamons, OD ’85

Maureen Weldon Kamons OD graduated from Carlow University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1985. She obtained a degree in vision science and her Doctorate of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1989. Dr. Kamons established her practice, Eyes On Regent Square, in 1992 and continues to practice today providing personalized eye care in a professional setting. Her volunteer efforts over the years include senior wellness screenings and educational programs for Pennsylvania school nurses.

An active member of the Western Pennsylvania Optometric Society, Dr. Kamons served on the Board of Directors from 2000-2007, and as President in 2005. In 2003 she was recognized as “Optometrist of the Year”. She has been further honored since 2004 as one of “America’s Top Optometrists” and her business Eyes On Regent Square was selected for the 2009 “Best of Pittsburgh” award by the U.S. Commerce Association. Outside of the office, Dr. Kamons enjoys spending time with her husband Larry and their two active children Monica and Keith. The family resides in Plum Borough.


Alumnae/i Association Awards of Distinguished Service and Achievement (formerly known as the Service SpotLIGHT Award) recognizes a distinguished person who embodies in their own life the Carlow University traditions of excellence and shared values through their professional achievements, personal accomplishments and dedication to the mission of the University.

These individuals have distinguished themselves not only in their academic and professional lives, but also their dedication and commitment to Carlow.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Nominees must be friends or graduates of Carlow University, Carlow College, or Mount Mercy College.
• The reputation, achievements and contributions of the nominee must bring honor and prestige to the University and its mercy-inspired mission.
• The nominee is expected to attend the annual luncheon to receive the award, except in rare circumstances.

This year alumnae/i will be recognized for their significant contribution to the Carlow University community at the Saturday Luncheon during Alumnae/i Reunion Weekend.

NOMINATION FORMS

When nominating an alum for the Alumnae/i Association Award, please provide the following:

  • Documentation of public or professional recognition the nominee has gained in her/his field of endeavor (1-2 pages)
  • Professional endorsement of the candidate: contact information from someone who knows of the nominee’s involvement in the area of the award for which she/he is being nominated (minimum of two)

PLEASE NOTE: The committee asks that all nominators keep in mind the prestige of this recognition program and the need for confidentiality. The candidate could be personally or professionally embarrassed if information concerning a nomination were to reach either the candidate or anyone else other than the Awards Committee.
