The Reverend George H. Tavard was born in Nancy, France and studied at the Grand Seminaire de Nancy and the Catholic Faculties of Lyons in France. He was ordained to the order of the Augustinians of the Assumption in Metz, France in 1947 and holds the Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from Lyon. From 1949-1951, he was a lecturer in theology at Capenor House in Surrey, England, and has since taught at Assumption College, Worcester, Massachusetts, Mount Mercy College/Carlow University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (where he chaired the theology department and founded the degree for theology), and Pennsylvania State University.
He has published numerous books and many more scholarly articles published in distinguished philosophical and religious journals in this country and abroad. He was a member of the Secretariat for the Unity of Christians, the planning commission for the Ecumenical Council.
Father Tavard's impact on the Carlow University community persists to this day, years after the man himself moved on. He returns annually to visit Carlow during the Reunion Weekend and is always so welcomed by his former students.
